Meta Prepares Camera-Free Smart Glasses to Combat Privacy Backlash
On September 21, 2026, [The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/) reported Meta plans to launch a cheaper version of its smart glasses without a camera at Connect.
Meta is set to introduce a new, camera-free smart glasses model at its Connect event, a development initially reported by The Information. This variant aims to offer a more affordable entry point while directly confronting the growing public scrutiny over privacy in smart eyewear.
Currently, all Meta smart glasses feature a white LED that illuminates when recording or capturing images. Despite this visual indicator, its visibility outdoors in daylight is often poor, leading to instances where individuals are recorded without their explicit consent or even awareness, UploadVR notes.
The privacy challenge is exacerbated by a clandestine market where users physically remove the LED indicator from their glasses. While Meta has responded with firmware updates designed to disable the camera if tampering is detected, this remains an ongoing technical struggle against illicit modifications, UploadVR reports.
Meta asserts that less than 0.1% of its smart glasses have been tampered with. However, given that the company, in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, has sold over 10 million units, this small percentage still translates to approximately 10,000 devices potentially operating outside intended privacy safeguards, UploadVR points out.
Our take: A camera-less option is a logical evolution for mainstream smart glasses. It provides a clear distinction for consumers who prioritize privacy or operate in camera-sensitive environments. This product iteration could significantly broaden market appeal, particularly for enterprise use cases or in public spaces where recording capabilities are often unwelcome, potentially making smart glasses a more acceptable everyday accessory.
