On May 21, 2026, reports indicate Snap is preparing to launch its standalone true AR glasses, Specs, this fall. Veteran tech journalist Alex Heath, writing for UploadVR, states the device will carry a price tag of approximately $2500.

Snap officially unveiled plans for consumer-grade Specs almost a year ago, following its developer-focused Spectacles AR kit. Unlike the bulkier, heavier Spectacles-which Snap rents to developers-CEO Evan Spiegel promised the consumer Specs would offer "a much smaller form factor, at a fraction of the weight, with a ton more capability," while retaining the same Snap OS.

Snap OS operates on an Android foundation but restricts native code, APK installations, and third-party engines like Unity. Developers instead create sandboxed "Lenses" - Snap's term for apps - using Lens Studio software, relying on JavaScript or TypeScript for high-level API interaction while the OS handles core rendering and interactions. This approach, as UploadVR notes, shares advantages with Apple's visionOS Shared Space, promoting instant app launches, consistent interaction, and seamless multi-user experiences, even enabling the mobile app as a spectator view for most Lenses. Multitasking is not currently supported, which UploadVR suggests is likely a hardware limitation.

Our take: A $2500 price point for Snap Specs positions it squarely outside the mainstream consumer market and directly against Apple's mixed reality strategy. This signals Snap's potential move into a prosumer or niche enthusiast segment, leveraging its unique Lens ecosystem. The success will depend heavily on the device's actual capabilities and Snap's ability to cultivate a compelling app library beyond its social media roots.
