This week, solo developer Paulo Cunha confirmed that his die-cast VR and mixed reality kart racer, Loony Laps, has completed its five-year development cycle. Pre-orders are now live on the Meta Horizon Store, with the release date accelerated to December 15, 2026, from its original Q1 2027 target. The game will support the entire Meta Quest family: Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S, priced at US$12.99.

Loony Laps is a single-player arcade kart racer that places players into a miniature racing set. It features 29 handcrafted tracks, incorporating loops, jumps, magnetic walls, branching paths, moving machinery, and oversized hazards. Gameplay is designed for chaos, introducing projectiles, giant rolling objects, portals that transform cars or teleport them, and power-ups that grant temporary invincibility.

The game offers both VR and mixed reality experiences. In MR, players can project the racing set into their physical room, allowing for track repositioning and dynamic viewing angles. Cars are rendered with attention to detail, featuring realistic toy aesthetics, intricate paintwork, and reflective surfaces. Available modes include Championship, Quick Race, and Time Trial, with new vehicles and tracks unlocked via progression.

Our take: We first reported on Loony Laps in September when its Q1 2027 Quest 3 launch was announced. Loony Laps reports that Cunha stated the game is self-published from Guarulhos, Brazil, and will be available in English. Review keys are expected closer to launch, and Smart Glasses Daily plans a full hands-on test.
