On May 27, 2026, Xreal announced a significant expansion of its product lineup, unveiling a new sub-brand, X By Xreal (xbx), and its inaugural product, the a01 display glasses. Priced at $299, the a01 marks Xreal’s strategic push into more accessible, lightweight smart eyewear designed primarily for media consumption.
The a01 glasses emphasize comfort and a stripped-down functionality. Weighing only 62 grams, they boast a perceived brightness of 1600 nits with HDR10 support, an anti-shake mode, and customizable frames. As WIRED notes, the 'xbx' branding, rendered in a distinctive yellow-green, invites comparisons to Microsoft's Xbox console, a similarity Xreal reportedly believes is distinct enough to avoid conflict.
Unlike more complex AR/XR systems that attempt to cram extensive features into a single device, the a01 focuses squarely on delivering a large, high-quality display. It connects to a phone, laptop, or gaming handheld, projecting content directly to the user's eyes without needing its own battery. Xreal positions this approach as a win for wearability, aiming to provide a comfortable viewing experience for extended periods, whether for late-night shows or long gaming sessions, as stated by the company.
This strategy contrasts sharply with competitors like Apple and Meta, which have pursued more powerful, albeit often heavier, all-in-one 'face computers.' As WIRED observes, while Apple Vision Pro and Samsung's Galaxy XR prioritize immersive mixed reality, Xreal doubles down on a niche: comfortable, high-quality personal displays. The a01's design, including high brightness and chromatic dimming, even allows for outdoor use, though its primary intent is not mobile AR.
This launch also comes shortly after details emerged about Xreal's Project Aura, a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm aiming for more powerful, yet still lightweight, mixed reality glasses. The a01 and Project Aura illustrate a dual strategy: offering both specialized display glasses for content consumption and working towards lighter, full-featured AR.
Our take: Xreal is intelligently segmenting the market. While the race for powerful, all-in-one AR continues, the xbx a01 proves there's significant demand for simpler, more comfortable screen extension. By leveraging existing device processing power, Xreal delivers an attractive option for casual users and gamers, potentially carving out a dominant position in the personal display category.
The xbx a01 is currently available in China, with a US launch slated for July.
