On May 19, 2026, XREAL officially confirmed Project Aura will launch globally next year, making it the inaugural pair of AR glasses to operate on Google's Android XR operating system. RoadToVR reports the device took center stage at Google I/O, underscoring Google's deeper commitment to the AR ecosystem.

During the Google I/O presentation, Project Aura demonstrated immersive Google Maps, traditional video content presented on both expansive and miniature virtual screens for multitasking, and immersive 180/360-degree YouTube experiences, according to RoadToVR.

The demonstration also highlighted Project Aura's DisplayPort-in capability with laptops, featuring integrated Gemini support and XREAL's proprietary 'autospatialization.' This onboard process is designed to convert flatscreen games, images, and videos into 3D spatial content on the fly, as noted by RoadToVR.

Our take: The arrival of Android XR on consumer hardware is a significant milestone for the smart glasses sector. XREAL, a dominant player in the AR display space, is strategically positioned to bring Google's long-awaited dedicated AR OS to market. This move could standardize software development for AR, fostering a richer app ecosystem beyond what proprietary solutions currently offer. It's a clear signal that Google is ready to contend for the spatial computing OS battle, moving beyond just phone-tethered experiences.
