This week, Snap confirmed September 16 as the official launch date for SPECS, its consumer augmented reality glasses. The event will take place in Los Angeles, California, with co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel leading the keynote presentation.

According to Snap Newsroom, CEO Evan Spiegel will provide the first in-depth look at SPECS. The keynote is set to demonstrate how the glasses integrate AI assistance, work tools, entertainment, and shared experiences into the physical world. Snap Newsroom indicates the product's core philosophy is to offer 'computing that keeps people present rather than staring at a phone screen,' emphasizing a departure from traditional mobile device interaction.

The launch event is scheduled from 4:00pm to 5:00pm Pacific Time and will be livestreamed globally at specs.com/launch, where viewers can pre-register. Snap states that an in-person audience of industry leaders, partners, developers, and creators will attend, offering them the initial opportunity for hands-on experience with SPECS.

SPECS follows the fifth-generation Spectacles, which were developer-only AR glasses Snap shipped in 2024, featuring a 46-degree field of view and running Snap OS. Snap Newsroom notes that CEO Evan Spiegel has previously indicated a consumer version would arrive in 2026; the September 16 date represents 'the first hard commitment Snap has made on timing.'

This launch lands in what has become the category's busiest year to date. Competitors like Meta have transitioned to their own branded lines, Samsung has introduced Galaxy Glasses in partnership with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, and Google is actively preparing its Android XR eyewear partners. Snap Newsroom asserts that Snap stands out as 'the only one of those players shipping true see-through AR with hand tracking and a developer platform already in the field.'

Our take: If this distinction holds true for the consumer release, it gives Snap a significant technical edge over competitors who are still leaning heavily on passthrough AR or more limited feature sets. The developer foundation from previous Spectacles could accelerate application development for SPECS.

Key details such as pricing, exact hardware specifications, and market availability remain unannounced. Snap has not yet confirmed whether SPECS will launch outside the United States initially.
