Announced May 6, 2026, Samsung Display demonstrated waveguide smart glasses at SID Display Week. The demo featured OLED microdisplays from eMagin, a company Samsung acquired in 2023. These microdisplays project imagery into both lenses via a waveguide structure, directing light through etched patterns to the user's eyes.
PCMAG reports that the micro OLEDs were built into a frame, allowing viewers to look through but not wear the device. This setup bypasses critical design challenges such as battery life, weight, and computing power.
Despite being a static display, the demonstration effectively showcased how the micro OLEDs could deliver detailed, transparent digital overlays onto the real-world view. The looping video concepts illustrated potential applications, including watching videos, chatting, and scanning items for nutritional information.
Our take: While a non-wearable demo leaves many questions unanswered, the integration of eMagin's microdisplays with Samsung's resources is a significant development. Waveguide technology is crucial for achieving truly unobtrusive smart glasses. This partnership could accelerate the development of high-fidelity, transparent AR experiences, addressing persistent challenges in display quality and form factor. The focus on video and information overlay suggests a strong consumer play, distinct from enterprise-focused AR.
