On September 24, 2026, Meta unveiled a significant expansion of its hardware portfolio, led by the new Meta VR Glasses. Priced at $1,299.99 and weighing approximately 100 grams, these VR glasses are slated for a spring 2027 release. The company also announced that its existing AI-powered smart glasses will gain over-the-counter hearing aid functionality. Further additions include an expanded range of audio-only Ray-Ban smart glasses, now featuring over 100 styles, and the Muse Charm, a keychain device designed for Meta's personal AI agent.

This suite of products signals a clear strategic pivot. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg framed the entire lineup around 'Muse' a personal AI, rather than the metaverse, which TNW | Meta notes as a departure from earlier expectations. According to TNW | Meta, Zuckerberg stated, 'It's now clear that personal superintelligence will not only come first, it will be much bigger and more important.'

The Meta VR Glasses aim for a radical form factor improvement, reportedly weighing less than a fifth of a Quest 3 headset. Its processing power, battery, and storage are offloaded to an external 'puck' connected via an optical tether, designed to clip to a pocket or bag. TNW | Meta reports the device utilizes micro-OLED displays and Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, offering up to three hours of video playback from the puck's battery.

Functionally, the VR Glasses are positioned as a versatile computing platform. Meta claims they are the first VR device to achieve IMAX Enhanced certification, with Disney+ streaming Marvel films in 3D in select countries from November. HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount+ are also set to offer their 3D catalogs. The company further promises more than 100 immersive live sports events annually, collaborating with partners like ESPN and UFC. The glasses can project multiple virtual screens, allowing any flat surface to serve as a keyboard, and integrate Muse directly into the OS for voice commands.

Gaming will also be a focus, with over 75 titles supporting hand gestures at launch. Andrew Bosworth of Meta mentioned the capability for photorealistic hologram calls, including, for the first time in VR, full-body holograms.

Our take: Meta's strategic re-alignment away from a pure metaverse play towards 'personal superintelligence' is a pragmatic move. The VR Glasses represent a significant step in hardware miniaturization, addressing a key barrier to mass adoption. Pairing advanced VR with critical accessibility features like hearing aids in its AI glasses demonstrates a diversified product strategy that could broaden appeal beyond early tech enthusiasts.
