On September 25, Meta Platforms announced a new partnership with Japanese telecom SoftBank, significantly expanding the distribution of its AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses in Japan. SoftBank will now carry the latest Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 glasses, alongside an existing assortment. According to GuruFocus, this move provides Meta with another distribution channel in a crucial consumer technology market.

This is not SoftBank's first foray into the smart glasses market. Seeking Alpha reports that SoftBank became the first mobile network operator in Japan to sell Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses in June. The company further expanded its Meta glasses selection in August. Alongside the Gen 3 launch, SoftBank will also introduce 'Meta Glasses by LISA' to its product line-up.

For Meta, this expanded retail presence is crucial. The company views smart glasses as a vital component of its broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence beyond traditional smartphones and PCs. Increased retail and carrier availability will offer Meta valuable insights into whether AI-powered wearables can truly establish themselves as a substantial consumer hardware category, as noted by GuruFocus.

Following the announcement, Meta shares reportedly closed up 4.5% at $777.59. Conversely, SoftBank Group's U.S.-listed shares saw a 7.6% decline. The next critical factor for Meta will be consumer demand for the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 post-global introduction, and the company's ability to continue growing its distribution network into more territories, GuruFocus emphasizes.

Our take: Securing a major carrier like SoftBank is a significant win for Meta. Japan is a demanding, tech-savvy market, and a strong presence there validates Meta's hardware strategy. While the Gen 3 models are still iterating on core capabilities, gaining mindshare and distribution now is key for long-term category growth. This partnership signals Meta's commitment to making AI eyewear a mainstream reality, moving beyond early adopter niches.
