Meta's Latest AI Glasses Surface in FCC Filings, Feature Mysterious Debug Port
Newly published FCC documents indicate Meta is preparing to launch a fresh lineup of smart glasses. The filings notably originate from Meta directly, rather than its usual partner EssilorLuxottica.

This week, new FCC filings revealed Meta's plans to introduce a new generation of AI-powered smart glasses. The documents list several model numbers-G4QM, G4QR, Q4QS, and G4Q-suggesting an expansion of Meta's wearable tech portfolio.
As Janko Roettgers reported for Lowpass, these specific FCC applications were filed directly by Meta. This is a significant deviation from past practices, where EssilorLuxottica, Meta's partner for Ray-Ban smart glasses, typically handled such submissions. The only prior exception was for Meta's Ray-Ban Display glasses.
Lowpass speculates this direct filing could signal a new direction. It might indicate another display-equipped model, a collaboration with an entirely new hardware partner, or even a line of smart glasses released under Meta's own brand, distinct from the Ray-Ban collaboration.
The filings also detail a peculiar "debug tool," which Lowpass notes connects magnetically to the glasses and offers a direct USB interface to a computer.
Our take: This development suggests Meta is exploring more advanced or specialized smart glass form factors, moving beyond the established Ray-Ban framework. The dedicated debug tool points to a device that could be more developer-focused, or perhaps features enhanced capabilities requiring direct system-level access for diagnostics and upgrades. Such a move could bolster Meta's long-term vision for a robust spatial computing ecosystem, potentially targeting a broader range of use cases beyond lifestyle consumer tech.
