Announced September 3, 2026, the upcoming arcade toy racer, Loony Laps, will launch on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets in Q1 2027. Developed by solo creator Paulo Cunha, the game aims to replicate the nostalgic appeal of die-cast car racing, integrating intricate toy tracks into both virtual reality and mixed reality environments.

According to UploadVR, Loony Laps will feature 29 unique, handcrafted tracks. These courses prioritize chaotic fun over realism, incorporating elements like loops, jumps, magnetic surfaces, branching paths, dynamic machinery, and various hazards. Players can also customize their miniature vehicles with different paints, wheels, and materials, enhancing the detailed die-cast toy aesthetic.

The game offers distinct play modes. In full VR, players are immersed within miniature, dedicated race environments. For a more integrated experience, the mixed reality mode projects the game's whimsical racetracks directly into the player's physical space.

Our take: A dedicated arcade racer with strong physics and creative track design could be a significant addition to the Quest library. The dual VR and mixed reality modes are particularly compelling. While VR offers full immersion into the game's miniature world, the mixed reality option has the potential to transform any living room into an outlandish race arena, a compelling use case for Meta's spatial computing capabilities. This kind of casual, pick-up-and-play title often finds a strong audience on standalone VR platforms.
