Meta Brings AI Tour Guides and XR History to the Computer History Museum
A new retrospective at Silicon Valley's Computer History Museum highlights six decades of wearable computing alongside interactive demos of Meta's latest smart glasses.
This week, Meta announced its founding sponsorship of a new spatial computing exhibition at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Titled "Extended Reality: Visions of the Future," the 800-square-foot showcase traces the evolution of wearable hardware across nearly six decades, beginning with Ivan Sutherland's pioneering 1968 head-mounted display and running through modern AI-enabled frames. The exhibition, co-sponsored by Google and Applied Materials, will remain open through March 28, 2027.
The installation features dozens of historical prototypes and landmark commercial devices, including the original Oculus Rift CV1, Google Glass, Magic Leap, Microsoft HoloLens, and Meta's Project Aria sensor frames. Beyond static display cases, Meta is using the partnership to showcase interactive software. According to Meta Blog (www.meta.com), visitors during scheduled demo sessions can try a specialized "museum mode" on Meta Glasses. The software identifies exhibit placards and plays curated curator audio, while allowing wearers to tap the temple arm to ask follow-up questions to Meta AI. The system uses distinct voice profiles to ensure visitors know whether an answer comes from museum historians or generative AI.
Our take: Cultural institutions are one of the most natural proving grounds for smart glasses. Traditional audio tour wands and phone apps pull eyes away from physical exhibits, but lightweight frames with camera recognition and open-ear speakers flip the dynamic. By allowing visitors to look directly at historical hardware while asking spontaneous questions, Meta is demonstrating the quiet utility of ambient AI without forcing wearers into bulky mixed-reality headsets.
