Meta's Reality Check: Scaling Back XR Ambitions
2025 was slated as pivotal for Meta's metaverse push. Instead, 2026 dawns with significant Reality Labs cuts and a strategic pivot.

2025 delivered seismic shifts to the XR landscape. Amongst Google's Android XR reveal and a speculative new Valve headset, Meta's dramatic re-evaluation of its metaverse ambitions stands as the year's defining narrative.
Early last year, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth declared 2025 a "make or break" moment for the company's XR division. He framed it as a choice between visionary success and a legendary misadventure.
As 2026 begins, "legendary misadventure" appears to be the prevailing outcome. Meta has initiated a radical change in its XR strategy.
Recent reports detail the shuttering or downsizing of multiple first-party VR studios. Furthermore, Horizon Workrooms is being discontinued.
In total, Meta is reportedly slashing about 10% of its Reality Labs division. This signals a significant re-focus, moving away from past VR and metaverse endeavors.
The full implications are still unfolding. It will likely be Q2 before Meta provides a comprehensive vision for its refreshed strategy.
